Style Guide: Selecting & Styling your Dinnerware
The dinnerware in your home defines your tableware and dining table setting. It is a pivotal part of your dinner service and home decor, be it a formal evening for entertaining guests or just a casual meal with some friends and family at home. A typical dinner set consists of charger plates, dinner plates, dinner bowls, serving bowls and serving platters for rice, breads or appetisers. While choosing your dinner service and styling your dining table, there are four key things to keep in mind:
Material -
Ceramic dinnerware is available in multiple materials, such as fine bone china, porcelain, stoneware and earthenware. Bone china and porcelain are non-porous, durable and light materials, which makes them functional as well as decorative. Stoneware is also a strong material that is heavier and is usually thicker than porcelain. Good quality stoneware is fairly durable and non-porous and, hence, can be used for daily and formal meals alike. Earthenware, on the other hand, is a porous and thick material, and is relatively less resistant to chipping.
Occasion -
Formal dinner settings and large get-togethers call for elegant and versatile dinnerware that can adorn, impress and sustain at the same time. In this case, we recommend using durable crockery in fine bone china or porcelain, with decal-printed patterns and artworks that connect with you. Select crockery with pure gold and platinum highlights for a touch of gleam on your table. For casual gatherings and meals, handcrafted stoneware and earthenware in unique shapes and glazes bring a relaxed and cosy charm to your table and occasion.
Coordination -
Your table should ideally be a coordinated concept in itself, or it must coordinate with the rest of the decor in your dining room. In either case, colours and textures are important considerations. If your space has a contemporary, modernist or vintage look, fine bone china and porcelain, with their sparkly whiteness, enhance the table and the space. However, minimal, natural and outdoor settings are greatly elevated with fine stoneware, that bring functionality and fine aesthetics to the table. If you have silver or steel cutlery, chances are that platinum-accented dinner plates and bowls will coordinate well.
Care -
All ceramic materials are functionally easy to maintain, that is to say that they are safe to use in the dishwasher, microwave, oven and freezer. However, dinnerware with metallic accents, such as gold and platinum, cannot be used in the dishwasher, microwave or oven. On the other hand, porous materials, such as earthenware, must not be left submerged in water for long periods of time.
